Climate change is a real and eminent problem that impacts all peoples from all countries.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned us repeatedly that rising temperatures over the next two decades will bring “widespread devastation and extreme weather”. We are certainly feeling these impacts in Canada, today, with increased flooding, wildfires, and extreme temperatures. Addressing this climate crisis requires a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to limit global warming to 1.5℃.

Bold action is required now.

While the Government of Canada has taken its responsibility to respond to the climate crisis seriously, more needs to be done to achieve our climate commitments.

The oil and gas sector is the leading sector in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for 28% of emissions in Canada, and surpassing both the transportation and heavy industry sectors. For Canada to reach its targets for emissions reduction by 2030, a bold emissions cap must be in place for the oil and gas sector.

With a comprehensive and realistic emissions cap for the oil and gas sector, and the right investments and support, Canada’s economy can continue to thrive while taking strong climate action.
